NOW FOR THE DECISION

I GOT INTO BYU-PROVO!!!!

So now the real difficult part begins. Here are some pros and cons of both school I am struggling between:

BYU-Provo

Pros: excellent nursing program (if I got in), family surrounding me, friends I know who are already there and who I know are going there, great school, cute mormon boys

Cons: no scholarships (that I know of), following the standard mormon traditions :)

Utah State

Pros: scholarships adding up to about $16,400 for tuition and housing, somewhere between $2000 and $2500 in cash to spend (because of scholarships), get to know new people, the aggie ice cream, good nursing program through Weber State, also has a great education program if I wanted to go into teaching, cute mormon and non-mormon boys

Cons: don't know anybody (I mean, I know a few people, relatives and some friends but nobody close you know?), cold weather, the "typical" college campus (i.e. drinking, smoking...yadda yadda)

Any suggestions or other pros and cons for either school??

  2. Whoa whoa whoa! Congratulations! Well, since you mentioned Aggie ice cream, you can't forget BYU Creamery Ice Cream.

And you can't forget Bolivia, either.

And BYU has a really good teaching program, too.
(Can you tell that I'm a little biased? Haha.)

  3. WOOHOO!!!
Pro for BYU - I live there. Well, super close.
Pro for BYU - great music program! And theater program.
Pro for BYU - you get the spiritual aspects in all your classes. Which is really unique and cool.
Con for BYU - there is an honor code. Honestly, I think this is definately more of a pro...
Con for BYU - no spring break.
Pro for BYU - semester ends in April, while all the other schools end in May.
Pro for BYU - football games! so much fun!
(Probably this is also at USU, but probably not as fun...)
Pro for BYU - every Tuesday there is a Devotional, and a lot of times a General Authority/Apostle/Prophet will come!
Pro for BYU - you are close to the MTC and can get a job there and drop glasses like I did!
Pro for BYU - the campus is so pretty!
Con for BYU - Freshmen are really annoying (this is probably also true at other schools...)
Con for USU - You are really far away from Provo (like 2 hours!) and I won't get to see you very often.
Con for USU - seriously, so cooold!
Con for USU - do you really want to go to Weber for their nursing program??
Pro for BYU - You can babysit for Olivia sometimes! She is so cute!
Ok, well, that's all that I can think of...for now...hehe.

  5. THAT IS SO COOL ALISON! CONGRATULATIONS! That being said, we can of course still be family friends wherever you decide to go to school, especially since Bryan and Bolivia and I are only going to be here another year. Still, I think you would really love BYU. I think in many ways you would totally thrive here. But those scholarships are pretty super amazing and awesome. I guess that is the trouble with being as cool as you are. Good luck choosing! Let us know what you decide!

  6. Awesome Ali!
Ok... You asked for my opinion. Here is my opinionated opinion. DO not read this if you do not want to read my unadulterated biases.

Definitely go to BYU. No question. Anything good about any other school is better at BYU. You will meet some of the coolest people in the world there. What makes BYU so great is that it attracts a religion, not a uniform academic demographic.
You will meet some of the most brilliant people in the world at BYU- people that could be anywhere doing anything but have chosen BYU for the society. This is BYU's greatest asset. It is really good to be surrounded by ambitious people that are smarter than you are. It makes you happier and better.
I do not know anything about Utah State University, but I know lots and lots about BYU, and it is a better school than I deserved to go to.
If you go to BYU all your dreams will come true.
Now, I will give you some cons about BYU. These are kind of harsh and will sting those that take the truth to be harsh, but whatever.
    1) It is in Utah. I do not like Utah very much. I felt claustrophobic in the mountains with no coast. It is also why I don't like Nebraska. I don't know that I will every really be happy in any one place. But whatever. If you like Utah, it will be a dream come true.
    2) It is in Provo. Provo is kind of small town. But that would apply to anywhere in Utah except for Salt Lake City.
    3) I don't like sports. But that is my problem with the world, not BYU in particular.

That is all. The academics at BYU are great and the professors are outstanding. You find professors that are at BYU for personal reasons (which means they could make more money and get more prestige at other Universities, just like the students. It is the world's best deal.) I love that it is run by the Church. It is a great place to learn and grow.

Whatever your view of the average Zoobie is is wrong. I only met maybe 2 people that were the typical dorky BYU student. Most of the people there are really independent thinkers and are going to do great things around the world.
BYU is a national university- it is not a big fish in a little pond. Go there go there go there!

Is the scholarship 50% of the total? If so, then even with the scholarship, BYU would be cheaper over four years! It's a steal at twice the price! I'll gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today!

So, there is my sermon, not a thought. I do not apologize for my proselytizing.
    Love
    Chris

p.s. if you want to call and talk to Anna, she will give you a much better idea of the programs. She has a good friend that went through the nursing program and is going to ask her a bunch of questions. Anna will be more tactful than me.

  7. Not to be weird but can I butt in on the Lewis family fest today? My brother Steven found out he got into the BYU today, too! I'm so excited for him and now I'm excited for you, too. I totally agree with all the BYU love I see in these comments. I didn't fully realize what a great school it was until I was done. So, yay BYU. And good luck to you.

  8. Hey Ali. I was telling Chris that either choice was good for you until I realized that you were talking about USU and not the U of U. I always get those confused. I don't know why. So many U's I guess.

Anyway, now that I have my acronyms straight I have a definite opinion. It is encapsulated by this comparison of USU and BYU done by US News and World Report: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/compare/items+3670+3677

The important thing to look at there is the fact that BYU is ranked in the top 100 schools and that USU is not only so far down it is not ranked, it is a tier 3 school. A TIER THREE SCHOOL???! Ali, you are way too brilliant for a tier three school. You are tier one all the way. In my head, it's almost like comparing BYU and NOVA.

Um. I will still be your family friend if you don't go to BYU.

Good luck with your choice. Uh, we may include you in our family prayers and pray that you choose BYU. Chris was stomping around the apartment last night worrying about you.

Man, we are nosy! Please forgive us and know that we think you are terrific. Way to be brilliant and get in to all the schools you applied to!

  9. Uh. My comment was not fair. USU is definitely better than NOVA. After all USU is somewhat selective and is a University--Nova is neither of these things. Also, they do have a pretty highly ranked education program. Sorry for the false analogy.

  10. I would also just like to add that you will probably find true love at BYU. What more could you ever really want in life? Also, I totally agree with Lisa and Chris and Anna and Bridget. I was being nicey and letting you make your own decisions in my first comment, but after all the things everyone else has said, I now feel free to blend in and say that I think BYU is a phenomenal school. Every time I think about you hanging out with all the wonderful people here and sitting in the classrooms here soaking up all the great things the professors have to say I get little warm fuzzies inside.
